Field Notes:

Ted

General Observations

Ted judges.

He is usually disappointed.

Ted observes the ranch from the living room, positioned directly at the door to the screened porch. From there, he watches events unfold with a level of concern that is not shared by anyone else.

He has attempted to communicate this concern silently, and at length.

These efforts have not been acknowledged.

Notable Incidents

The Summer of Porch Entertainment

When the peafowl occupied the screened porch, Ted and Bill discovered a new form of enrichment: watching.

Four tiny chaos agents, flapping and pecking and generating drama on the other side of the glass.

Ted monitored the situation with the intensity of a nature documentary narrator who has opinions.

No one asked for his commentary. He provided it anyway.

The Great Migration

When the birds moved to the greenhouse, the entertainment ended.

Ted continued to check the porch.

The porch remained empty.

His disappointment was comprehensive.

The Chair Dispute

Ted and Bill competed for control of the prime viewing chair.

Ted frequently lost on technicalities.

The counting may have been a factor.
