Leia presents as the emotional center of the flock—watchful, concerned, the first to sound an alert when something feels wrong.

This is a front.

Behind the scenes, Leia runs operations.

She works in tandem with Han like a wingman in a con movie, except the con is “make the younger birds miserable.” She has serious FOMO. Someone has to save our skins, and she has decided that someone is her.

The younger birds have a different perspective on this.

The Perch Protection Racket

Leia and Han have established a system.

If either of the younger birds flies up to a perch, the older bird already sitting there slides over to crowd them. Just enough to make them uncomfortable.

If the younger bird doesn’t immediately leave, pecking begins.

This usually causes the younger bird to fly to the other perch.

Where it starts all over again.

It was not in the brochure.

Han Solo

Subject is on patrol. Threat assessment: incorrect.

General Observations

Han Solo believes he is the protector of this ranch.

He is not.

But he believes it deeply, and with the kind of conviction that cannot be argued with because it does not require facts. He has guard dog energy, an impressive lack of critical thinking skills, and no volume control.

He moves with purpose. The purpose is usually unnecessary. The conviction is absolute.

His energy is pure “spinning beachball”.

The False Alarm Period

Upon gaining access to the larger pasture, Han spent considerable time sending up alarms for perceived threats.

Investigation revealed the threats to be: grass, wind, shadows, nothing, and more nothing.

Current status: Ongoing, though frequency has decreased as he’s found new things to honk about.

The Amazon Driver Incident (One-Time Success)

Han Solo honked at an Amazon delivery driver.

This represented his first and only appropriate threat assessment. There was hope this indicated a learning curve.

Subsequent deliveries: No honking.

Assessment: Accidental success, not pattern recognition.

Han’s interpretation: Threat successfully neutralized. Job complete.

Current Status

Believes he is the hero of this story.

Neo

Subject follows.

General Observations

Neo follows Morpheus.

This is not a criticism. It is a documented behavioral pattern.

Where Morpheus goes, Neo goes. What Morpheus decides, Neo supports. If Morpheus chooses rooftop camping in freezing temperatures, Neo is already halfway up.

He does not lead. He does not question.

The Betrayal

It was the night I almost won the bedtime standoff.

I had the lights set up. The floodlight outside, the warm glow inside. The greenhouse looked like a cozy Airbnb. All four birds were gathered near the entrance.

All I needed was one bird to walk in. Just one, and the rest would follow.

Neo looked at the roof.

He stretched his neck upward, like he was checking for a good landing spot.

Then he flew up.

One by one, the others followed.

My precious, sweet baby chose confidence and independence at the exact wrong moment.

The Camera Incident

Neo was pinned in a corner by Leia during one of her enforcement sessions.

Pecking. Cornering. Full intimidation.

He was rescued by a disembodied voice yelling through the security camera and, eventually, physical intervention.

He did not start this. He was just there.

Morpheus

Subject is uncatchable.

General Observations

Morpheus imprinted on Shandra.

Shandra tried to prevent this. She followed the guides. She limited handling. She encouraged flock bonding.

Morpheus imprinted anyway.

This has had consequences.

She is headstrong, curious, and absolutely certain that whatever she is about to do is the right call. She leads. Neo follows. Together they have discovered more ways to almost die than any two birds should reasonably encounter.

The Nightly Aria

For three months, Morpheus whistled at full volume every dusk. Up to thirty minutes nightly, while the older birds calmly went to sleep.

Shandra tried everything.

Eventually she found the one thing that worked.

It was not what anyone expected.

The Copper Wire Incident

Morpheus once reached her head out of her playpen, grabbed something she shouldn’t have, and swallowed it in seconds.

A magnet is now dragged over construction areas before the birds have access.

You’ve heard “curiosity killed the cat.” Morpheus heard that and took it as a challenge.
